Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a dental treatment used to remove infection from inside your tooth. Infection of the nerve inside your tooth is caused by trauma, large decay, cracks or chips, worn out fillings or crowns. Symptoms of infection include, pain, swelling, sensitivity to hold or cold, and difficulty when chewing. If your tooth requires root canal it is usually your last chance to save it from extraction. Sometimes it is better to extract your tooth and replace it with an implant. Your doctor will review what treatment option is best for you.
The root canal procedure is normally painless and oftentimes can be completed in one visit. Your doctor will remove the infection inside your tooth. Then your tooth is sterilized, and sealed with a special filling cement. When there is infection, you will be prescribed antibiotics. Once your tooth is symptom free it should be restored to prevent fracture and further breakdown.
Your dentist will decide what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth after root canal. Most of the time a post is used to strengthen the internal aspect of the tooth. This procedure is followed by a crown that strengthens the outside part of your tooth and restores its original anatomy and appearance.
